Samsung Jadi Produsen Chip Canggih 3nm Pertama di Dunia
Samsung Electronics has become the chipmaker to mass-produce microchips , the company said Thursday (30/6) as it tries to catch up with Taiwan's TSMC technology.

chips will be smaller, more powerful and efficient, and will be used in high-performance computing applications before being incorporated into devices such as mobile phones.

"Compared with the 5nm process, the first-generation 3nm process can reduce power consumption by up to 45%, increase performance by 23%, and reduce area by up to 16%," Samsung said in a statement Thursday.

The South Korean conglomerate last month announced a five-year plan to invest 450 trillion won (US$356 billion). The company said it would advance mass production of chips based on the 3 nanometer process.

Most of microchips are made by just two companies, namely Samsung and Taiwan's TSMC. Both are running at full capacity to address global shortages.

Samsung is the market leader in chips , but has been scrambling to catch up with TSMC in the advanced foundry business.

TSMC dominates more than half of the global foundry market, with clients including Apple and Qualcomm, while Samsung follows with around 16% market share according to TrendForce data.

TSMC plans to start volume production of the 3nm technology in the second half of this year and entered the 2nm technology development stage last year, according to the company's annual report in 2021.
