Fluctuations in oil prices that make domestic fuel price fluctuations trigger premium consumers to switch to products with electric technology.

Fluctuations in world oil prices create uncertainty in the price of fuel oil or BBM, especially non-subsidized types that are widely consumed by premium cars. This condition is considered a positive sentiment for electric car sales.

This was stated by the General Manager of Lexus Indonesia, Bansar Maduma. According to him, fluctuations in oil prices that cause fuel price fluctuations will make premium consumers look for more efficient technology.

"This can be seen from the enthusiasm of consumers for electric cars which became the main presentation of Lexus at the GIIAS 2022 yesterday," Bansar said to Bisnis.

He assessed that the fuel price fluctuation was a stimulus for Lexus consumers to switch to vehicles with more efficient fuel consumption. From the range of models displayed by Lexus, many consumers are captivated by the HEV, BEV, and even PHEV models.

One of the phenomenal models that was first shown in Asia by Lexus Indonesia is the All New RX PHEV. "Many have also been interested in the PHEV technology, in principle we provide all electrical technology. For consumers who want to try new technology, they will order the Lexus UX 300e, which is our All-Electric model,” said Bansar.

On the other hand, based on data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), sales of electric cars including hybrid (HEV), plug in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric (BEV) cars throughout January to July this year were relatively stagnant. Total sales reached 2,039 units, only growing 0.59 percent compared to the same period last year of 2,027 units.

Overall, the electric car segment is still full of sales of HEV models. Of the total January-July sales, the HEV model accounted for 1,415 units, minus 2.95 percent YoY.

While the BEV model at the same time recorded a total sales of 614 units. That number grew 14.98 percent compared to 534 units in the same period last year.

The PHEV product, which only contains one model, namely the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, only collected sales of 10 units for seven months this year. In total, the electric car segment in Indonesia is still far from competing countries in the Asean region such as Thailand.

On the other hand, as a player in the electric segment, Lexus Indonesia views that efforts to develop the electric car market must be seen as a joint commitment, although it is not yet promising in the market.
